Experience the Holiday Season in Boston

Boston knows how to brighten the darkest days of winter. By late November, glowing trees, sparkling waterfront displays, festive markets, and decorated brownstones turn the city into a walkable holiday postcard. The season brings plenty of reasons to bundle up and explore, from Boston Common’s signature tree to blue-lit waterfront paths and a full neighborhood of holiday fun in the Seaport. For a colorful home base with its own creative spirit, Studio Allston is a great place to stay for a Boston holiday trip.

See Boston Common and Commonwealth Avenue Light Up

Start with one of Boston’s best-known holiday traditions at Boston Common. On December 3, 2026, the city will host its annual tree lighting from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. The celebration centers on the official Christmas tree gifted by Nova Scotia and fills the Common with seasonal color. It is an easy first stop for visitors who want the classic Boston holiday experience in the heart of downtown.

After the Common celebration, keep walking toward Back Bay for the Commonwealth Avenue Mall lighting. The trees along the Mall are scheduled to light up the same evening, creating a glowing corridor from Arlington Street toward Charlesgate. The combination makes December 3 an especially good night to see two signature displays in one outing.

Take a Holiday Walk Through Back Bay

Holiday lights feel right at home among Back Bay’s brownstones and tree-lined streets. Begin at Copley Square, where the city’s annual tree lighting takes place on November 30, 2026. From there, walk toward Commonwealth Avenue Mall to see its illuminated trees, then continue through the neighborhood at your own pace.

Back Bay is also a natural place to pair sightseeing with holiday shopping. Newbury Street runs parallel to Commonwealth Avenue, so it is easy to move between decorated streets, boutiques, cafes, and restaurants without building a complicated itinerary. Give yourself time to wander instead of rushing from one attraction to the next. Some of Boston’s best seasonal atmosphere comes from simply seeing familiar city blocks dressed for the holidays.

Walk Beneath the Lights at Christopher Columbus Park

For a waterfront display, make your way to Christopher Columbus Park in the North End. The park’s 260-foot trellis is illuminated for the season, turning the walkway near Long Wharf into one of the city’s most memorable holiday photo spots. The 2026 lighting celebration is scheduled for November 23, but the display itself is the reason to return on a winter evening.

Its location makes it easy to extend the outing. Walk along the harbor, head into the North End for dinner, or continue toward nearby downtown attractions.

Find Holiday Fun in the Seaport

Boston’s Seaport turns into Snowport for the season, bringing together festive decor, outdoor activities, shopping, and special events. The Holiday Market at Snowport is scheduled to run from November 6 through December 27, 2026, making it a convenient stop for local gifts and a dose of holiday energy by the waterfront.

Nearby, Martin’s Park adds another distinctly Boston display. On November 28, the park’s play ship, surrounding fencing, and pedestrian bridge will be illuminated with blue and white lights. Plan the Seaport and Martin’s Park together for an evening that mixes modern Boston scenery with family-friendly seasonal sights.

Stroll Through Historic Beacon Hill

Beacon Hill offers a quieter kind of holiday atmosphere. The protected historic district is known for its brick sidewalks, Federal and Greek Revival architecture, and proximity to Boston Common. During the season, private homes and storefronts add their own decorations, giving an evening walk through the neighborhood an intimate feel that contrasts nicely with the city’s larger public displays.

Start near the Common and explore the surrounding streets before making your way toward Charles Street. Because the neighborhood itself is the attraction, there is no ticket or fixed schedule to follow. Take in the architecture and enjoy the holiday decorations and spirit. It is a simple way to add classic Boston character to a night of holiday sightseeing.

Make a Night of ZooLights

If you have a car and want to venture beyond the city center, ZooLights at Stone Zoo in Stoneham offers a full-scale light experience. From November 20 through January 3, the zoo’s tree-lined paths glow with thousands of lights from 4:00 to 9:30 p.m. This year’s displays include a candy-themed winter transformation of Yukon Creek and a festive model train set.

ZooLights is ticketed, so buy admission in advance for the date and entry time that work for your trip. It is a strong choice for families or anyone looking to devote an entire evening to holiday lights rather than fitting a display between other stops.

Plan a Holiday Lights Route

You do not need to see everything in one night. For a downtown route, combine Boston Common, Commonwealth Avenue Mall, and Back Bay. On another evening, pair Christopher Columbus Park with the North End. Save the Seaport for a separate outing so you have time to browse the market and see the waterfront displays without watching the clock.

If your visit spans several days, check event pages before heading out, dress for changing New England weather, and leave room for hot chocolate, dinner, or an unexpected shop along the way. The best holiday trips balance the headline attractions with time to wander, and Boston’s compact center makes that especially easy.
